How awesome are these Graffiti-inspired collages?! Irvington's 7th graders have been hard at work, practicing different styles of typography in their sketchbooks. We focused specifically on the traits of Graffiti lettering. After designing the letters of their names, the students practiced filling them in with shading techniques, to create a sense of VALUE in their artwork. Next, the students cut out the shapes of their letters, and also cut out shapes to create an interesting background for their collage. We discussed tips to achieve good composition in their artwork and the students were encouraged to arrange their papers in a few ways before gluing it all together. That way, they could try out a few compositions before deciding what they liked best. One of my favorite things about this project is how everyone's artwork turned out so completely different! I love all the variety in style each of the artists have. I can't wait to display these bold, colorful artworks in our hallways! |
